Animal Farm is an allegorical novel by George Orwell, published in England on 17 August 1945. The book tells the story of a group of farm animals who rebel against human farmers in the hope of creating a society where animals can be equal, free and happy. But ultimately the rebellion is “betrayed” and it is presented as a political satire, with the farm falling into as bad a situation as before under the dictatorship of a pig named Napoleon.

Time Magazine named the book one of the 100 best novels in English (1923 to 2005); It ranks 31st on the Modern Library List of Best 20th Century Novels and. It ranked 46th in the BBC's "The Big Read" survey to find the nation's most loved novel. It won the Hugo Award in 1996 and was included in the "Great Books of the Western World" selection.
